QT430 Powerplant

What happens when you put a Corvette engine in a Cessna 172?

FIRST, you use 1/2 the fuel, and SECOND, you're not using avgas that is 1/2 again the cost of mogas, a 67% savings.  Nor do you add oil each flight or so.

If you have a need for a proven engine, you have to study the "QT430" package, It uses all of the components on and around the GM all aluminum 6.2 LS3 V8 engine.  It is the perfect engine at an exceptional price for any airplane but really performs for bigger aircraft.  If you need economy of operation and service plus safety, it shines.  This is an automotive engine for which the FAA has given an STC Issue Letter outlining the certification basis for installation in the Cessna 172.  This 172 is our experimental test aircraft which we use to demonstrate the merits of the installation.

One must realize that using Detroit technology will always satisfy our Planet’s commitment to noise suppression, alternative fuels, global warming, while providing the best operating economics and convenience.  They give you a dependable engine, and keep you on the leading edge.  It's an accepted fact that the crank/connecting rod engine is here to stay. There may be a better design, but the production is too broad and extensive to change. This LS Series of engines do deliver as they are Performance Engines.  QA gives you a universal package that has many more features than others and yet gives you a much better price.

This "QT430" package runs at very low noise levels.   It includes everything firewall forward and aft  except your mount and cooling system that are unique to your plane.  If you would rather use your own propeller rather than the ground adjustable that is in the package, there will be a $2,000 discount.

1. CONVENIENCE & COST – Detroit does assure you of using the most practical, most economical propulsion available, FOR SURE.  Parts and service are always local and reasonable.  A new and complete crate engine for a few thousand dollars can replace the old engine with 2 technicians in 4 or 5 hours, making an overhaul quick and cheap.  You use all of the auto sensors and controls to always operate at peak efficiency where you can have real single power control.   One prop rotation for each start, every time.

The "QT430" package is sold with how-to instructions for $24,500 FOB Orlando, with the first 10 (ten) as introductory offers at $19,900.

Options for higher (or lower) hp engines and for an electric hub or special props are available.  MT Propellers, headquartered in Deland FL, is an excellent source for higher hp props having a selection from more than 100 to suit your mission.  On the other hand, Sensenich in Plant City FL has a broad choice of small aircraft wood and aluminum props.

2. FLEXIBILITY – With the choice of propeller or propeller pitch, you can de-rate your engine to the hp output you desire (displayed on the monitor), slowing its speed and gaining fuel economy plus adding to your TBO.  Continuous torque and hp are shown on the engine monitor. You don't need the POH to set prop and power, you jockey prop pitch and MP to get the power output you desire. An electric controllable prop makes this easy and the potential fascinating.  You don’t sacrifice weight as this package will be near that of the Cessna 172 Continental setup.  You will see 5 gph and could expect 3,000 hours between replacements.  Similar to the auto, you have the option to run on 4 and 6 cylinders as you choose.  Engine options in the same block are available ranging from 400 hp in steps to 650 hp.  By de-rating your engine, you leave extra hp that increases your service ceiling and can be used for high altitude boost, air conditioning, more muffling, and you can maintain a constant climb rate to much higher altitudes.  In our Cessna 172 test aircraft, the engine is de-rated to 180 hp to conform to the structural limits and is licensed in the Experimental Category.  Since the engine and associated equipment must be FAA licensed in the Experimental Category, they are not sold as direct replacements for any FAA certified production aircraft including Cessnas, Pipers, etc.

Cooling Intake

3. PERFORMANCE – You are liquid cooled and this has its many merits.  Reducing cooling considerations and cowling drag without shock.  With a radiator fan, you can forget about cowl flaps.  The engine design and operation naturally give you better efficiencies and effectiveness.  With this GM LS Series, 4th Generation Engine, you are all aluminum with better heat transfer and reduced weight, still a small block with big block outputs.  The cooling system is very efficient with its departure from the conventional layout.  Here you see in our test aircraft, the cooling intake uses the original carburetor air scoop. The engine was designed for marine and sport applications running near full continuous power so it is ideal for aircraft.

4. ENVIRONMENT – With the package you receive resonators that are embedded in the exhaust pipes reducing the noise level considerably inside and out.  We believe that the engine installation in the 172 is among the quietest -- if not THE QUIETEST aircraft in the general aviation fleet. You operate with 87 octane mogas but your engine can evolve to the better alternative fuels along with the industry, like the E-gases.  A change in the computer logic and the fuel injectors converts to pure ethanol.

Helical Gearbox
Helical Gearbox

5. SPEED REDUCTION UNIT – A very durable, 55 lb 2:1 helical gear box is used that was a part of the FAA certification package. The gear box has been used in abusive airboat operations for over 25 years, handling over 1,000 hp. It is a reversed rotation, maintenance free, self contained, Almag and Chromalloy unit with a soft coupling to smooth the engine impulses and avoiding system harmonics.  It uses a conventional 6 bolt Lycoming hub although a Continental hub can be furnished on request.

MT Propeller
MT Propeller

6. PROPELLERS – A modified MT Propeller electric hub interfaces well with the engine package and provides both C/S and variable pitch operation.  We used it effectively for experimentation and performance enhancement.  We have computer and professional assistance to design your own custom blades or you can call on the prop manufacturers and their inventory for help.  If you, or when you know your prop requirements, we can design and provide composite blades for your mission. We have flown a ground adjustable, paddle blade with great success, and at extreme blade pitches.  So your options are great.  We are investigating a revolutionary prop blade for even better operating efficiency and noise reduction at low prop and high aircraft speeds.    See Developing Programs.

Engine Monitor Display
Engine Monitor

7. COCKPIT DISPLAY – A daylight, liquid crystal monitor similar to that shown is provided in the package so that you can choose from the many engine functions to view in a format of your own choice.  Here you have access to the complete diagnostic scan used by auto technicians to trouble shoot or tune performance even in flight.  A commercial automotive diagnostic tailored to this package is available.  Button and menu choices bring options for safety overrides, your 4 or 6 cylinder ops, constant hp or MP operation, constant prop speed or pitch or even better, the props relative wind, an altitude hold, and more of your making.

Redundant Fuel Pump
Redundant Fuel Pump

8. SAFETY – Redundancy in this "QT430" package surpasses all other power plants.  These LS engines meet strict Quality Control standards because they are assembled by selected technicians of the Performance Build Center.  The engine and sensors are untouched.  However, external, dual, dry fuel pumps replace the auto submersed one for space, simplicity, duplication, and for other reasons.  QA is working to use the GM submerged pumps too.  You have excess power with most applications to increase its robustness and carry on after losing one or two cylinders. You can single or dual alternators with outputs from 45 amps to 160 amps,  add a cooling fan, include an oil cooler all for safeties sake.  Our Odyssey, sealed battery gives well over 1 hour of engine operation by itself.

9. PROVEN – This package has been a decade in evolutionary development.  A built up engine was first flown in an antique classic with good success.  It was then flown in a Travel Air 2000 biplane which has logged some 300 hours of safe operation.  An update then was placed in the Cessna 172 with some 50 hours before being replaced with the LS2.  We plan to conduct the necessary tests to complete FAA Certification in the 172 as well as other general aviation aircraft.

Come and fly this Cessna to observe the advantages.

Again, the price is a very reasonable $19,900 FOB Orlando for a piece of mind and bunches of extras, or $17,900 without the propeller.
